Shenzhen has a sound legal system, free market mechanisms, and a highly efficient municipal government. Established on the initiative of Mr. Deng Xiaoping in 1980, Shenzhen is the earliest and fastest-growing special economic zone in China. It enjoys the reputation as the window of China’s opening to the outside world and is the pilot region for the reform in China’s economic system. Shenzhen features a business environment largely compliant with the international business practice. It is the first city in China which has established a set of laws and regulations for intellectual property right protection, legal operation and transaction, fair competition, and investors’ rights’ protection. Shenzhen is one of the fastest growing cities in mainland China in economic terms. In 2005, Shenzhen saw a total GDP of USD 60.93 billion, ranked No. 4 among China mainland cities, while it’s per capita GDP ranked first. The total volume of imports and exports was USD 182.82 billion, including the export volume of USD 101.52 billion, ranked first for 13 consecutive years among major China mainland cities. The fact that Shenzhen has become one of the most developed and centralized regions for hi-tech industry in mainland China cannot be overemphasized. In 2005, the production value of hi-tech products was RMB 488.53 billion. The IT products of Shenzhen, including computers, program-controlled exchanges and access network equipment make up a large part of the market share of products from China. The China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF), a state-level, grand international fair approved by the State Council, is held every October in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is also one of the important regional financial centers in China. The density of financial institutions and number of foreign financial institutions in Shenzhen makes it one of the leader in this respect among major mainland cities. Shenzhen is in a leading position in China in respect of the service quality, profitability level and the application of advanced technology within the financial sector. Shenzhen is city with diverse and entrepreneurial spirit. Shenzhen is a new city with immigrants, and the cultural characteristics of its inhabitants are different from the traditional culture of other cities. This is partly due to it absorbing cultural influence from Hong Kong. With its beautiful ecological environment and fast growing economy, Shenzhen has attracted many talents from home and abroad. Each year, more than ten thousand undergraduates are recruited by Shenzhen’s companies and other organizations. A number of the top universities in China have also set up their research institutes in Shenzhen, for example, Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen and Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. Shenzhen
is a major gateway of China to the world market. Shenzhen is the only city in mainland China with a land port, seaport and airport. There are 17 ports in Shenzhen, including the largest land passenger port of China – Luohu port, the fourth largest airport of mainland China – Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, and Shenzhen Harbor – the fourth largest container port in the world. More than 100 international cargo routes have been opened, setting out over 300 liner vessels every month. In 2005, the container throughput of Shenzhen Harbor was 16.2 million standard containers. A modern transportation network is in place with express highways and railways reaching out in all directions. Two major railway lines, Beijing-Canton railway and Beijing-Kowloon railway, converge in Shenzhen. With telecom networks covering the entire city, a high-speed communication network mainly composed of optical cables integrating digital transmission and program-controlled exchange has taken shape.
